Garrad Hassan release new version of GH Bladed - 1st Nov 2007

Garrad Hassan (GH) is proud to release version v3.80 of GH Bladed, its wind turbine design software.

Cutting edge developments include the new Hardware Test and the Advanced Transmission Interface Module options. New exclusive features are also now available in the Base and the Advanced Processing Modules.

David Quarton, Company Director responsible for GH Bladed, comments on the release of v3.80
“We are delighted to launch this new version of GH Bladed. The new features available offer the users of GH Bladed improved capabilities for wind turbine modelling, simulation, post-processing and control system hardware testing. We remain determined to maintain GH Bladed as the leading wind turbine design tool throughout the industry. ”

New features in the Base Module

  • Blade and aerofoil encryption facility extended to allow encryption of any parts of the turbine, and to prevent the output of certain variables from the simulation results.
  • 3D graphical display of turbine structure.
  • Mechanical tower vibration damper model available.
  • Improved Campbell Diagram presentation.

New features in the Advanced Processing module

  • POT (peak over threshold) option for extreme load extrapolation.
  • Additional options for multiple calculation set-ups.

New Advanced Transmission Interface module option

  • Allows user-defined gearbox/transmission dynamics to be integrated into Bladed simulations through a DLL interface.

New Hardware Test module option allows control system hardware to be connected directly to Bladed simulations. Its key features enable the user to:

  • Test PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, pitch system interfaces, power converter interfaces and combinations of these systems working together.
  • Verify hardware operation in the factory and reduce time on site.
  • Develop interactive and batch procedures directly within the Hardware Test user interface.
  • Use and recycle procedures for repeat tests and automatically generate Microsoft Word test reports.
GH Bladed is firmly established as the industry standard tool for design calculations of performance and loading of onshore and offshore wind turbines. There are now more than 200 users of the software around the world including wind turbine manufacturers, design consultants, certification agencies, research institutes and universities. GH continues to develop and enhance the capabilities of GH Bladed in order to meet the demands for ever more sophisticated and reliable wind turbine design analysis. Garrad Hassan software leads the way in China - 5th Sep 2007

Garrad Hassan (GH) has achieved spectacular success in China with the sale of its wind turbine and wind farm design software products: GH Bladed and GH WindFarmer.

Thesesoftware packages, already established as “industry standard” tools around the world, have been widely welcomed and accepted by wind turbine manufacturers and wind farm design institutions in China.

There are more than 30 licences for GH Bladed in use in China by a range of organisations, including wind turbine manufacturers, blade manufacturers, universities, research institutes and certification agencies. The software has been validated by Germanischer Lloyd and is used by more than 200 licensees around the world for the design of onshore and offshore turbines.

GH WindFarmer - the wind farm design software is currently used by over 50 clients in China. GH WindFarmer is available in Chinese and 9 other languages and has been sold in more than 30 countries. GH WindFarmer is supported from Beijing and around the globe by a team of wind farm design specialists.

GH has also been training Chinese engineers in turbine modelling, load calculation, turbine control design techniques and wind farm design based on the use of GH Bladed and GH WindFarmer.

David Quarton, director responsible for the GH Turbine Design Group, commented “We are delighted that our software tools– GH Bladed and GH WindFarmer have been so widely adopted by the Chinese wind energy industry and we are working hard to provide high quality training and technical support for all our clients in China. Garrad Hassan is very proud that by means of the technology transfer of our software tools and training, we are able to contribute to the rapid growth of the wind energy sector in China.”

GH Tidal Bladed enters validation phase - 15th Dec 2005

The development of the engineering models within Tidal Bladed has been completed. The validation phase of the project is now beginning.

Model test results will be analysed and compared with predictions made with the new software.

Development of the graphical user interface will be undertaken in parallel with Beta testing of the software planned for the second quarter of 2006.

The Beta testing will include use of the software to calculate design loads according to the Germanischer Lloyd Draft Guideline for the Certification of Ocean Energy Converters Part 1: Ocean Current Turbines.

Detailed Offshore Support Structure Model for GH Bladed - 7th Nov 2005

At the Copenhagen Offshore Conference Garrad Hassan unveiled the latest version of GH Bladed which incorporates new features for offshore wind turbine design including the ability to model multiple-member space-frame support structures.

To minimise the costs of offshore wind turbine deployment – especially in a time of high steel prices – the optimisation of the turbine support structure design is critical. Due to the complex interaction between wind and wave loading effects, this can only be achieved using the GH Bladed integrated design approach which combines both sources of structural loading in a time-domain model.

GH Bladed developments:

• Multiple-member support structure model
• Designer free to specify arbitrary space-frame
• Hydrodynamic and buoyancy loads rigorously calculated for each member
• Loading & dynamics of support structure integrated into time-domain model of whole turbine

A wet version of GH Bladed! - 1st Sep 2005

GH is becoming increasingly involved in marine renewables and has won a number of contracts in this exciting new area. One important project currently underway is to adapt the GH Bladed software for tidal stream turbines.

This work, which involves both development and validation of the software, is being 50% funded by the UK DTI New and Renewable Energy Programme and is scheduled for completion in March 2006.
