Garrad Hassan & Partners has an immediate vacancy for a graduate civil/structural engineer within its Offshore Group. The role is to be based in either our Bristol headquarters or our Horsham, West Sussex office, depending upon the preference of the applicant. The work entails a mix of engineering studies; primarily preliminary and concept structure designs, specifications, due diligence assessment and providing technical support services, such as design checks and reviews, for international offshore wind projects. Reporting to the Offshore Principal Structural Engineer, the main activities will include:

• Concept design of offshore structures supporting wind turbines and substations
• Project planning and management for preliminary and front end engineering design studies
• Preparation of technical documentation such as design basis, specifications and technical reports
• Due diligence checks, structural reviews and reporting for structural aspects of offshore wind farms
• Loading and structural analysis using in-house software, for which training will be provided
• Design to contemporary offshore structural standards including DNV, API and Eurocodes
• Providing engineering inter-disciplinary input in support of other teams
in-house and external
• Providing technical support to clients
• Attendance at technical and project management meetings with clients and contractors
• Potentially undertaking detailed design of offshore wind turbine and substation structures, including pile design
• Liaison with other staff in design, reporting and the preparation of CAD drawings.

The ideal candidate will:

• Be qualified to degree level, or equivalent, in a civil or structural subject
• Possess excellent communication and problem solving skills and experience
• Have a good knowledge of civil, structural and geotechnical design
• Have a basic understanding of the key operational characteristics of wind turbines with respect to support structure design
• Be able to understand, interpret and prepare technical reports
• Be able to supervise, and liaise with, other GH staff and contractors
• Be able to communicate effectively via remote link
• Have well developed IT skills, including advanced use of MS office applications and Mathcad

SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are fundamental in the control and monitoring of wind farms. Garrad Hassan has developed a proprietary wind farm SCADA system that’s widely used in the United States. The systems are deployed by US personnel but are currently configured and supported by the UK team. Growth of the US GH SCADA business has created the need for a US based SCADA Software Specialist so that an increasing proportion of the configuration and support work for US projects can be performed by US personnel.

Responsibilities:

A position is available as an Energy and Development Consultant in our expanding Imola office. The primary function of this position will be to assess the wind resource and expected energy output of proposed and operational utility-scale wind farms in Italy. Duties will include analysing wind and other climatic data, inspecting sites and measurement equipment, performing wind flow modeling, reviewing turbine site suitability, designing wind farm layouts, conducting statistical uncertainty analyses, and writing technical reports.

Required qualifications include
